Autonomous driving challenge for new students

A team of students -yet to be assembled- will be focusing on the development of a cooperative autonomous car. The car will have to be able to follow the car in front independently, entirely based on sensor data - both for accelerating and slowing down and steering.

The start of the project also marked the start of the organization of the second Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge, which be held on the A270 road between Eindhoven and Helmond, just like the first edition back in 2011.

The ATeam is open students of all departments. There will be a kickoff meeting in the Automotive Lab in Gemini-Noord on February 12 at 5PM. Students who want to join the team are advised to attend.

Four million euros for TU/e research on self-driving car

The technology foundation STW is making 4 million euros available for the i-CAVE research program led by professor Henk Nijmeijer of Eindhoven University of Technology. The i-CAVE project targets various aspects of the self-driving car.

Automatically following the vehicle in front

Should we take Google’s claim that it is going to put self-driving cars onto the market within five years seriously? Will we also have the first driverless cars moving around here before long? Henk Nijmeijer does not expect that things will develop that swiftly with autonomous vehicles. The professor of Dynamics & Control thinks that cars should first learn to communicate with each other. That is why the Automotive Lab of TU/e is adjusting Renault Twizy’s in such a way that they can anticipate the driving behavior of vehicles in front of them. Next year the ultimate test will be conducted in a new Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge on the A270 between Eindhoven and Helmond.
