Intro 2014 | Looking back on a mostly successful week
The Central Intro Committee (CIC) can look back on a rather successful week. CIC chairman Tim Beishuizen: “The trainings on Thursday were perfect. The event at IJzeren Man is another one to remember for next year. Although we know it’s very dependent on the weather, Thursday’s a good day to freshen up. Lunches have improved greatly compared to last year. “It tasted better and there were more options. Out lunch packages were too big, however. We advise next year’s committee to pack smaller lunches, so there’s extra food for those who’d like more.
Jim Stolk, chairman of the Federation of Study Association Eindhoven (FSE), is mostly positive. Thanks to changes in the program made by CIC, the Intro didn’t suffer too much from the bad weather. And yes, beers flew everywhere during this year’s Cantus, but that was because of its taste rather than it being non-alcoholic, says Stolk. “I do believe the rain ponchos that were given out prior to the Cantus pushed students to throw their beers, to be honest.”
Still, not everything has worked out as smoothly, according to Stolk. The WipwApp that was meant to guide students through the city center effortlessly was flawed. Stolk: “It’s was a major cause for confusion and frustration. We should change that in the future.” The FSE president feels the same way about the lunches, which were a bit excessive. Stolk: “Lunch was extreme compared to other Intro editions. I saw dumpsters full of bread on Friday.”
Stolk wants to address the noise in the Market Hall. He read a number of complaints through Twitter, and addressed the issue twice himself - with CIC, too. “I’ve been told entire groups fled the area because of the noise. I don’t think any of the complaints were taken seriously.” Beishuizen objects: “We did turn down the volume once, but I don’t think it was loud to the point of it being annoying. And people can choose to move away further from the stage.”
Hay Becks of Safety & Security is also quite happy with this year’s Intro program. “The weather forced us to move the program around a bit here and there, but we already had several scenarios at the ready.” Not once has the weather been a cause for cancellation. It was pretty cold during the Cantus, which made it goose-bump central, but first aid could relax. Becks: “Once student was ordered to take a hot shower. With two thousand students, I’d say that’s only a minor inconvenience.”
