Playtime for inventors

This week is seeing the start of a new series of Friday Afternoon Lectures in the Natlab at Strijp-S. The scientific lectures and network sociables are intended for staff members, PhDs and Master students of TU/e. Other interested parties are also welcome on Friday afternoon to listen to the presentation by Ivan Sutherland, the inventor of the graphic computer card.

The Friday Afternoon Lectures are intended primarily as a ‘pleasant way to spend the afternoon’, says Lucas Asselbergs from Studium Generale. “In the best tradition of the Philips group, where engineers used to be given a free rein on Friday afternoon to let their creative minds wander freely. And had ample space to set up projects, without any certainty about their chance of success. A kind of playtime for inventors.”Invited speaker of the second series of the Friday Afternoon Lectures is Ivan Sutherland (USA). In his talk Computers Yet to Come, Sutherland shares his vision on the essence of computing and computer programming, showing us that our current mode of operation is based on outdated paradigms that originate from the time that computers just started to emerge.
