TU/e to check legal drinking age
Starting January 2014, if you’re not yet eighteen you’re not allowed to drink any alcohol. An amendment was passed that changed the legal drinking age from sixteen to eighteen. Underage TU/e students can expect extra checks. Last week, the Executive Board OK’d a new policy. Associations don’t plan on denying minors access to their events.
Licensees at TU/e have to add a section to their regulations stating they won’t serve alcohol to people under eighteen. They’re responsible for supervision and enforcement of the new legislation, and they have to be at least twenty-one. TU/e security may visit socials and parties more often. These are some of the conditions that have been included into the policy memo drawn up by Internal Affairs in collaboration with the Education and Student Service Center, the Federation of Eindhoven Student Associations FSE -the umbrella organization for study associations- and the Executive Board.
Mirjam Jahnke, head of Safety and Security, says security will not be focusing on enforcement. “But we will drop in on socials and events. More often than we’ve been doing so far. If we encounter a violation of the rules, we’ll schedule a meeting, and if it happens again in the same place, they’ll be reprimanded.” Executive Board member Jo van Ham adds: “The reputation of TU/e is at stake, here. If it turns out talks don’t work, we won’t shy away from more serious measures. We may even cancel the license.” By the way, neither of the two thinks it will come to that.
Study and student associations are debating the consequences as well. None of them plan to keep out minors. Some associations are thinking about an electronic system, or adapting the current system. Other associations rely on social control, or a combination of measures. There are several associations thinking about canceling certain activities, or setting them up differently. And people have already started brainstorming about the Intro. As far as the Executive Board is concerned, the Cantus won’t be canceled. They’ll be looking into non-alcoholic beer of event beer as possible solutions.
