This year’s Intro even bigger and more informative

The number of Intro participants of this year’s Intro at TU/e will see a major boost compared to last year, when there were 1,800 newbies and supervisors. This year, TU/e is expecting 2,500 people. From August 19-23, they will get to know TU/e, Eindhoven, and each other. This year’s program will also be more informative than at last year’s edition.

The opening of the <link http: www.tue.nl en education studying-at-tue introduction-week intro-2013 _blank external-link-new-window external link in new>Intro will not take place on Monday afternoon, but on Monday evening this year. At 8PM, the Rector will welcome all Intro participants in the MetaForum market hall. Prior to his opening speech, most of the estimated 2,500 Intro kids and supervisors will have probably met each other and their departments already. The student umbrella organization ESSF, Compositum, Scala, and FSE will present themselves through informative videos that same night, and Studium Generale is preparing quite the active quiz. The night will be concluded with drinks in the market hall.On Tuesday, everyone will go to their departments first for a study assignment or project. During lunch break everyone can enjoy a meal in the market hall, and visit the sports fair at the Student Sports Center. Because of the large number of participants, these activities will have to be enjoyed in two groups. From 4PM, students can attend trial sports classes. Later that day, everyone will be attending another study activity, after which the Intro groups will be rewarded by either a night out on the town, or a party at their departments. The Wednesday program has a new setup this year. Students will be participating in the Game without Frontiers, a type of hexathlon. The competition will be held at various spots between the Bunker and the Student Sports Center. The grand finale game will start at the Hondsheuvels sports park at 4PM. Every department will eventually have a winner. The athletic event will replace the Bunker hike and the athletic tournament. Reason for the change is the large number of Intro students this year, says Jessica van de Ven, Intro coordinator from the Education and Student Services Center (STU). The Wednesday night Bunker Festival will see a comeback.Thursday is LichtIn day, which is the joint introduction day of all Eindhoven students (from TU/e, Fontys, and the Design Academy). Van de Ven estimates that a total of six thousand new students will join the day’s activities. Opening and lunch will be held in the MetaForum market hall once again. After that, all students will go to the city center. “The day is meant to give students the opportunity to get to know Eindhoven as a city”, says Van de Ven. Think Music Center, the Effenaar, Dynamo, sports and games at city hall square, activities on Light Square and at Van Abbe Museum, GLOW, Dutch Design Week, the public library, and art center MU.The LichtIn organization also wants to try and create the longest dining table of the Netherlands, with the help of the bars and restaurants in the Dommelstraat. The record attempt may also be organized at Strijp-S, because there will be an Intro party in the Klokgebouw that night anyway. On the Intro’s final Friday the day will start with the traditional hangover breakfast organized by the Eindhoven student associations. The breakfast will be followed by the Cantus, which will no longer be in a tent – for financial reasons – but in the MetaForum market hall as well. “It shows new students MetaForum is the real heart of campus and student life.” The pond will be fenced off to prevent students from jumping in afterwards. “The fire department will be present to hose participants off”, Van de Ven assures. The future of the Cantus alcohol fest is unsure. In January 2014, the legal drinking age goes up from 16 to 18. “Fifty percent of our Intro students is under 18”, Van de Ven says. “We have yet to figure out a way to solve this.”During the Intro week, the Cursor editorial staff will publish a daily <link http: web.tue.nl cursor internet jaargang52 _pdf intro3.pdf _blank external-link-new-window external link in new>Intro newspaper. The past two years, Intro news items were published online, but this year the Intro Cursor can be found in print once again. On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, the newspapers will be handed out during breakfast.Should you have a room available for one of this year’s Intro students, please send an e-mail to the <link mail window for sending>Central Intro Committee.
