Academic awards festival closes academic year
The academic year 2015/2016 was brought to a close on Friday afternoon with the awarding of the Academic Year prizes for the best completed PhD (Stef van den Elzen, visualization of networks), design project (Iok-cheong Wan, optimization of a timber factory) and thesis project (Eline van Haaften, recovery of damaged cartilage). This year for the first time the Marina van Damme Grant was awarded during the closing ceremony. The recipient was BMT alumna Lisanne van Oppen, now a PhD candidate at the Radboud University Medical Center.

Van Damme grant for battle against muscular dystrophy
Last week dr.ir. Erica Coenen, who received her PhD at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at TU/e last year, was awarded the Marina van Damme Grant 2013. The nine-thousand-euro grant will be used for learning about how to set up an international organization for people who suffer from dysferlin, a type of muscular dystrophy. Coenen has a muscular disease herself.

Mega grant for functional molecular systems
The TU/e division of Molecular Science &Technology, and associated researchers of the universities of Groningen and Nijmegen have been awarded a Gravity Grant (‘Zwaartekrachtsubsidie’) of 26.9 million euro for setting up a research center for functional molecular systems.

Two European research grants for TU/e
The European Research Council (ERC) will be awarding nearly 800 million euros in research grants, divided among hundreds of young top scientists. The Netherlands are doing a good job with 51 of these starting grants. TU/e will ‘only’ be receiving two. Dr. Yves Bellouard of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and dr. Patricia Dankers of the Department of Biomedical Engineering were awarded the grants.
