Sports spotlight | Fellenoord’s favorite number is 11
TU/e boasts a total of 38 student sports associations. And every one of them offers its own unique experience: from slamming aces to skimming across the water. At student sports center SSC, you get a wide range of options to choose from: gaming, jumping, running, cycling, rowing, flying, shooting, hanging, playing chess, surfing, punching and pushing. Cursor wants to put every one of these associations in the spotlight. The first question is “What is your favorite number?”
Warming up
Fellenoord’s favorite number is 11 because this year marks its eleventh lustrum and because the association has eleven tennis courts at its disposal. Next to those courts is the Paviljoen, which they only have to share with the student hockey association. Fortunately, they can also hold meetings there, because the board room is too small to fit a table and chairs. “There’s lots of clutter, though, as you can see,” says secretary Elan Stompff.
The Eindhoven student tennis association is proud of its membership numbers, as they are higher than those of Thȇta. Members have to leave a year after graduation, but many new people join every Intro. That means the secretary is very busy in September. “There’s a turnover of about two hundred members then.”
Why the association is called Fellenoord, Stompff doesn’t know. “It’s the name of a neighborhood in Eindhoven, but we’re not even located there.” He does know a lot of other facts about the association, which are presented in numbers below.
Scores
- The association has 634 members, 250 of whom only attend training
- There are 84 committee members who handle 146 different tasks
- They have 20 committees, with the Open Tournament Committee having the largest amount of work
- There were 440 participants in the Open Tournament in 2024
- Fellenoord has 3 sister associations with whom they organize the GAME Cup
- There are 11 tennis courts
- 1970 is the founding year
- Agenda item 7 at every meeting: Rumors, Rumbles, and Riddles
- Fellenoord provides 1,152 hours of tennis training
- You only pay 10 euros for 32 hours of training
Analysis
Fellenoord members love a good match against students from other universities. The GAME Cup is organized annually by one of the student tennis associations of Groningen, Amsterdam, Maastricht or Eindhoven. This year, Fellenoord traveled to the far north for the event. There is also a Student City Tournament every year. “That includes Wageningen, Nijmegen, and Tilburg and you play against a different association each day.”
Raiding pranks
When student associations meet, there’s bound to be some brassen, or raiding. Stompff is happy to explain brassen. “You secure an item (aka you steal it, Ed.) and within 24 hours, you send a brasbrief (a ransom letter) stating what needs to be done to get the item back. We recently captured the flag of the Rotterdam association, but they urgently needed it back. The statutes of the association (which is called Passing Shot) stipulate that they must have the flag in their possession. So we just sent it back by mail. Along with a note saying that this is not how brassen works, haha.”
