Sports spotlight | De Club’s favorite number is 19
TU/e boasts a total of 38 student sports associations. And every one of them offers its own unique experience: from slamming aces to skimming across the water. At student sports center SSC, you get a wide range of options to choose from: gaming, jumping, running, cycling, rowing, flying, shooting, hanging, playing chess, surfing, punching and pushing. Cursor wants to put every one of these associations in the spotlight. The first question is “What is your favorite number?”
Warming up
De Club’s favorite number is 19. What the ‘third half’ is to soccer players, the 19th hole is to golf players. After giving it your all to putt a small white ball 18 times, it’s time to relax at the final stop, the 19th hole. This can often be found at café La Route on Stratumseind.
According to treasurer Gabriel Bermann, Eindhoven student golf association E.S.G.V. de Club gives students all the space they need to meet one another. “Golf is an individual sport, but if you come to training you can play a round with others and get to know each other. We have members with very different backgrounds and they come from many different countries.” Gabriel himself is French, but there are also members from Spain, Romania, the Netherlands (obviously), and other European countries. “We don’t have teams, but also no peer pressure.”

Analysis
The internationalization of De Club comes with an advantage: a real French chef is now in charge of the barbecue. Gabriel has already taken care of the food at least a dozen times after the monthly Shootout, a tournament that’s set up differently each time. Whoever wins the Shootout can call themselves club champion for a whole month and – a nice bonus – wear the one and only E.S.G.V. de Club Green Jacket.
One term that’s indispensable to golf is ‘handicap’, the number indicating a golf player’s rating. A handicap tells you the average number of strokes above par that a player needs to complete a course of 18 holes, with par being the number of strokes in which an average golfer should be able to play a hole. The word ‘par’ is derived from the Latin word for equal. The holes of De Club have par 3. Beginners have a handicap of 54, which is equal to 18 times 3 strokes.
