Totem Game Dev hosts competition: develop a game in 24 hours
Student team Totem Game Dev is hosting a competition in which participants will develop a game within 24 hours. This is the first time the team is organizing the so-called Game Jam. The event will take place in Matrix and will start on February 14.
Last year, the TU/e campus already served as the official battleground for the Netherlands in a global Game Jam. “Now, we want to organize an Eindhoven edition,” says team leader Egor Larionov. Students from both TU/e and other universities are welcome to join the competition. Experience in game development is not required. “Above all, it’s an accessible way to get a first taste of game development. It’s an open event, so anyone can participate.” You can sign up here.
Participants will form teams of up to four people to create a game based on a theme they will be given on the spot. The jury, consisting of three student team board members, will ultimately award the prize for the best game. There will also be a guest lecture by Seyfettin Dinctürk, a Quality Assurance Tester who has worked on several well-known games.
Postponed
The Game Jam was originally scheduled to take place last week, but due to the cyber-attack on the TU/e, the student team decided to postpone the event by a week. Larionov expects a turnout of about 40 people, in addition to the four other board members, who will form a team of their own. Sign-ups are pouring in not only from Eindhoven and the surrounding area. “35 people have already signed up, including a few students from Amsterdam.”
The student team cannot provide overnight accommodation for the participants on campus, but they are handling the sleeping arrangements themselves. “Some of the members will take participants home with them. There, we will probably just spend the whole night gaming or continuing to work on the game. It’ll be like a LAN party.” The team will also arrange dinner and lunch.
Larionov is very excited. “It will be 24 hours of game-making with little sleep and probably a slight hangover,” he says laughing. “I’m curious to see what we’ll create.”
