Sports spotlight | Tamar’s favorite number is 6

TU/e boasts a total of 38 student sports associations. And every one of them offers its own unique experience: from slamming aces to skimming across the water. At student sports center SSC, you get a wide range of options to choose from: gaming, jumping, running, cycling, rowing, flying, shooting, hanging, playing chess, surfing, punching and pushing. Cursor wants to put every one of these associations in the spotlight. The first question is “What is your favorite number?”

Warming-up

“Tamar identifies as a close-knit club where the small-scale spirit of the past is still very much alive,” is how chair Lotte Vosman and treasurer Franciska Asma describe their club. “We know almost everyone by name."

It takes a while to pick a favorite number. They settle on 6, because Tamar has six men’s teams and will also have six women’s teams next year, six players are on the volleyball court at the same time, and because they have some fun math examples with the number six. Lotte: “The court is 9 by 9 meters, which is one and a half times six.” Franciska: “Last year, we celebrated our twelfth lustrum, that’s two times six.” On top of that, the board is made up of six students.

Moreover, 6 is also the jersey number that Lotte, who plays on Ladies 1, often wears. And in photos, she likes to stand next to teammate Lotte, who wears number 9 on her back. “Then you get 69 and position 69 is funny.” Franciska plays on Ladies 5 and prefers jersey number 42. “Because 42 is the answer to life, the universe and everything.”

Although Tamar is not as small as it used to be (there are now 162 members), it is definitely still as well-organized and structured. Even the numbers that tell us something about the volleyball association have been neatly arranged by the board.

Analyses

The loyalty card is an incentive to participate in everything Tamar organizes. This year, there are 26 activities, including three trips, where you can earn a sticker. At 40 percent participation, you get a small gift. “A shot glass, a beach ball, or a golf ball with a logo. If such a golf ball ends up in your glass, you have to down it in one go.” At 80 percent, you get something cooler. “Last year, it was a bicycle bell with our logo.”

Rogier Flikweert is Tamar’s most extraordinary member of all time. He was a student member for 13 years, and after graduating, he stayed on for the maximum number of years alumni are allowed to remain members. That adds up to 18 years of membership – from September 6, 2004. “When he realized that someone who was born in that year had just become a member, he figured it was time to stop. Now, he is one of the eight honorary members.”
