Three large common carp, a mirror carp and dozens of small common carp were caught two weeks ago in the pond at the Zwarte Doos – there are still carp that used to live in the Paviljoen pond. They have been released into the pond at the new student housing towers at the Blauwe Loper. This will also be Egbert's new home.
In addition, some aquatic plants have been moved from one pond to the other. "So far, Egbert's new companions seem to be doing well in their new location. They are regularly spotted there, look healthy and the water quality is assessed as good by experts," says TU/e spokesperson Frans Raaijmakers.
Avoiding stress
Egbert will be moved to the pond at the Blauwe Loper on May 7. “We are convinced that this new pond with other carp will contribute positively to his well-being. The move will be carried out carefully, and we will do our utmost to cause Egbert as little stress as possible.”
Koi expert Marco Zegers will be in charge of the process. Egbert will be carefully cornered with a drag net, after which he will be caught and transferred to a container with water. Raaijmakers: “We will ensure that his gills remain wet at all times. We will then check him for possible symptoms of illness before we finally bring him to his new home.”.
TU/e expects a great deal of interest from the community in the relocation, but emphasizes that it is important that people who come to watch keep their distance. Otherwise, the fish may experience stress, which is not good for his health.
Interest
The TU/e community is very concerned with Egbert. People regularly ask about Eindhoven’s most famous carp, including whether he is still alive if he has not been seen for a while. In the winter, fish often stay deeper in the water because of the cold. “But as soon as the water temperature rises above ten degrees, we will probably see him more often again,” says Raaijmakers. This is the case again these days and Egbert may still be spotted in the Atlas pond before he moves.
At the moment, the time of the move is not known yet, only the date. As soon as it is known, the time will be added to this article.
