Sports spotlight | WETH’s favorite number is 2891
TU/e boasts a total of 38 student sports associations. And every one of them offers its own unique experience: from slamming aces to skimming across the water. At student sports center SSC, you get a wide range of options to choose from: gaming, jumping, running, cycling, rowing, flying, shooting, hanging, playing chess, surfing, punching and pushing. Cursor wants to put every one of these associations in the spotlight. The first question is “What is your favorite number?”
Warming up
WETH’s favorite number is 2891. It’s a variation on the founding year and every WETH member knows it, as it’s the number they use for the locks used to store the car keys while surfing.
According to Tjibbe Lakerveld, who was on the board last year, Eindhoven Student Wind- and Kitesurf Association WETH is known for its relaxed atmosphere, broad acceptance of members, and few obligations. WETH plays wind sports, windsurfing and kitesurfing to be exact. If you want to surf at sea without a sail instead, you can go to ESSV Avalanche Boarders.
“Kitesurfing is an extreme sport, which means it can only be done in designated areas,” says Lakerveld. “We travel to Hoek van Holland, Scheveningen, and Wijk aan Zee for it. Windsurfing is allowed anywhere. It can be just as extreme in strong winds, but the board can come to your aid in an emergency, which makes it safer.”

Analysis
Pet oak? “That’s the oak tree between the lanes on the road to Zeeland. Our tradition is that anyone on their way to surf water takes a picture of the oak tree and sends it to the WhatsApp group. If we ever miss the moment – it does happen from time to time – we look for a picture on the internet and send that one instead. We do make it clear that it is someone else's picture by choosing a spring picture in the winter and a picture with snow on the oak tree in the summer, haha.”
Low temperatures don’t bother the WETH members. The goal is to surf at least once a month. “Regardless of the temperature, we head for the sea when the wind is strong. I don’t wear gloves, not even at 5 degrees Celsius, because that can affect my grip. My face and neck also remain exposed so I can see better. I do always wear a helmet, because a boom can deliver quite a blow.”
