Three tips for students to get USE/ITEC points
With these activities you can score USE/ITEC points in September
You can only complete your bachelor’s degree at TU/e once you’ve attended at least five Studium Generale programs with the USE/ITEC label. Cursor highlights three options every month. This month: a photo tour, an interview about the liberation of Eindhoven, and the American elections translated into music.
1. Guided tour of World Press Photo Exhibition
Theme: guided tour / photography
Date: September 4 thru 24 (not on weekends)
Time: time of your choice (30 minutes)
Location: first floor, Atlas
After more than fifteen years, the TU/e campus has become a standard location for the World Press Photo Exhibition. Just like in previous years, the worldwide winners of the photo competition are exhibited at the Atlas building. If you just visit the exhibition you won’t get any USE/ITEC points, but you will if you take one of the guided tours.

2. Interview with deputy mayor about 80th anniversary of Eindhoven’s liberation
Theme: interview / history
Date: September 11
Time: 12.40-13.20 (40 minutes)
Location: Blauwe Zaal, Auditorium
This month, on September 18, 2024 to be exact, it will have been 80 years ago since Eindhoven was liberated during the Second World War. Now you might be thinking ‘isn’t Liberation Day on May 5’? And you’d be right: on May 5, 1945, the whole of the Netherlands was freed from the German occupiers. However, just over half a year before – on September 18, 1944 – Eindhoven had already been liberated as part of Operation Market Garden.
On Wednesday, September 11, Deputy Mayor Stijn Steenbakkers will be interviewed about Eindhoven in wartime and the city’s remarkably early liberation.
3. Music & The White House
Theme: politics / music
Date: September 18
Time: 20.00-21.15 (75 minutes)
Location: Coronazaal, Luna
In this program, politics and music join forces to tackle the theme of the upcoming elections in the United States. In Music & The White House, America expert Willem Post will take you on a journey through the history of American democracy, while jazz musician Michael Varekamp translates this journey into music. ‘They give politics a soundtrack’, according to the Studium Generale website.
What is USE/ITEC?
TU/e trains engineers. However, the technical solutions they come up with do not stand alone. Technology serves a societal purpose and its application also has consequences for society. This is why it’s important that engineers in training broaden their societal, ethical, cultural, and personal horizons.
All bachelor’s programs at TU/e are subject to the USE/ITEC regulations. USE stands for ‘user, society & enterprise'. After all, as an engineer you’re always dealing with users, society, and the business community. ITEC stands for Impact of TEChnology and focuses on ethical questions relating to the use of technology.
The USE/ITEC regulations stipulate that bachelor’s students must obtain a certain number of points to show they’ve mastered the non-technical aspects of technology. Studium Generale organizes activities in this context.
